“Fuckers” - Triple Word Score!

So I was browsing Digg yesterday and came across this which gave me a minor case of the lulz.

The long and short if it is: Mum buys Scrabble game for kid to improve vocabulary, game has naughty words in it, mum gets outraged.

Now, first thing that strikes me is this: What kind of mother buys their kid a fucking video game to improve their vocabulary? Jesus H. Christ, buy him a goddamn book!

Now, I agree that a game rated 3+ by the PEGI should not contain swears and the “junior” option the game contains which removes the bad words should probably have been better advertised. However, I think the mother’s apeshit reaction is a little much. I mean, stopping her son from playing the game altogether and complaining to Nintendo? Hey, while we’re at it, why not stop her son from reading the dictionary?

I know the kid’s only eight years old, so it’s not very appropriate to subject him to that sort of language, but one would imagine, that in the society we live in, he most likely already knew the obscenities cropping up in the game (and wouldn’t surprise me if he even had a vague idea of what they meant). And if he didn’t know of them already, he’s going to eventually. And if his mother is a good parent, she’ll make sure to tell him not to use the words.

I was listening to music, playing games and watching films full of swears when I was his age, but my mum wasn’t bothered, because I wasn’t going around spouting them off all the time.

In my opinion, if this kid’s mother is so worried about her son being subjected to these words, then she needs to take a better look at her parenting, rather than trying to blame a video game.

Also, reading about the game using “fuckers”, getting a triple word score and winning the game made me lol so much. :D

Of course, this could all be bullshit, since the game give you the ability to import words into the game. Chav mum + custom game dictionary + Tabloid newspaper = WIN!

Celebrations

It’s my best friend’s 18th today, so celebrations are in order, in the form of going out to the pubs and having a few alcoholic beverages. Should be a good night, except for the fact that, apart from him, I don’t really know anybody who’s coming, since it’s mostly all his army cadet mates that are coming. Still, shouldn’t be too bad. The ice tends to break after a couple of drinks.

I’d better make sure I find out when the last bus home will be as well. :\

In regards to the question I posted about the style switcher, it seems pretty obvious that it’d be better to just keep the PHP one. I may end up posting a tutorial on how to make one of each.

I’m getting a new PS3 as well. My one was supposed to be picked up for repair yesterday, but it wasn’t, since the courier had some sort of fuck-up with their database and lost all the details. I phoned up Sony, and it turns out they’re just going to swap mine for another 60GB one. Apparently, some other guy handed in a broken 60GB, but it was still in warranty, so they just swapped it rather than repair it for him. They’ve now repaired that PS3 (completely stripped it down and replaced all the parts), so it’s working fine. So, they’re coming to pick mine up on the 9th, and at the same time, I’ll get this newly repaired one, along with 4 months warranty! Yay!

Still leaves me PS3-less for a little over a week though. :P

I Am Employed!

Remember that job interview I posted about earlier? Well, turns out I got the job! I got a phone call this afternoon from the guy that interviewed me telling me that I was successful! Not sure when I’m gonna start though. I need to go in on Wednesday to get all the details sorted out.

Woo! Some income at last. Shame I get paid monthly though. I could do with some money for buying Christmas presents and I doubt my first monthly wage will be in time, or at the very least, it’ll be cutting it pretty short. Oh well. Can’t really be helped.

I’ve also got two assessments tomorrow in college as well, which I totally forgot about until a friend of mine reminded me about an hour ago. One in Software Development and one in Computer Architecture. I should be alright in the SD one, but the other… ehh… probably not so. Gonna have to do a bit of last minute revision.

To psyche myself up for getting an Xbox 360 at Christmas, I’ve been playing a lot more of the original Xbox games I’ve gotten the past few months. I got an original Xbox on my birthday, and I bought a shit-load of games, but I’ve not really played any of them extensively. The past couple of days, I’ve been playing through Halo 2. Fantastic game. Shit ending. They might as well have put up a notice at the end saying “Game over. To be continued. Now you have to wait another 3 agonising years.” At least I only have to wait about a month, since Halo 3 will be one of the first game I’ll be getting when I get a 360. Not so much for the story, but just to see what all the fuss is about the multiplayer. According to Yahtzee, the single player ain’t so great.
