AWSUM.org.uk is starting to amass a small collection of reviews over at Rev.iew.me, and most are fairly positive. However, in the more recent ones, people are complaining that the navigation is too big and that it’s a little distracting from the main content. So, I’m considering making it a little bit smaller, in both width and font size (which would also make the main content area a little wider). You can preview what it looks like here.
Now, my question to you, dear reader, is this: Which do you prefer? The small navigation, or the big one I have now? People seem to have mixed opinions about the latter. Some love the big bold layout, while others don’t. So, please, comment with your opinion and whether or not you’d rather see a smaller navigation, with a little more room for content, or keep it the way it is?
Oh, and on that little preview page, you can also try out two new colour styles I’m thinking on adding: Licorice, for all you morbid folk out there, and Strawnana (strawberry and banana), which uses two different colours, rather than two shades of the same one.
So, on Saturday, my parents were away in Edinburgh at a party for something to do with my dad’s work. Whatever, I wasn’t particularly interested. All I cared about was that, apart from my sister, I had a free house for the day. So, what did I naturally do?
PARTY!
Well, not quite a party, but I had a few friends round. There was six of us altogether. We bought a shit-load of drink and I hooked up my PS3 to the big TV we have in our living room and we made a night of it. The night was going pretty well, until about midnight.
A friend of mine, Angus, announced he was just nipping to the toilet. Fair enough. We started to worry a little when he’d been gone a good twenty minutes and hadn’t returned. Hmm. So Sean and I went to see what was up. Door was looked, so we managed to open it with a coin. And what did we find?
Angus, sitting on the floor, out for the fucking count. That’s what.
None of us had noticed, but he had a lot to drink. As well as the two crates of beer and a crate of cider, we also splashed out on a bottle of good old Jack Daniels. I had a couple of drinks, as did Sean, and two of my other friends had one.
Angus had the rest.
…
Holy shit.
I’ve never seen anyone as drunk as Angus was that night. Sean and I were sitting around on the floor of my hallway with Gus for a good hour and a half, trying to talk sense into him (and get sense out of him). Eventually, we managed to get him into the living room and onto the sofa, upon which he promptly fell asleep. We hastily woke him up and what followed was a rather amusing exchange between and him and Sean, in which Sean tried to coax him into giving him Angus’ phone, so he could phone his parents to come pick him up. Somehow, we didn’t think he’d be able to cycle 6 miles back home in his state.
His dad agreed to come pick him up, but since he didn’t know where I lived, it was easier to meet at the nearby Primary school. Fair enough. But that was a few minutes walk away, and Angus could barely stand. So, we had the job of helping him get there. A job made easier by the hilarity of his trousers falling down halfway there.
Met his dad, dad took him home, he was still wrecked in the morning, everyone lives happily ever after.
Except me, who had to clean up all the empties at 3am for my parents coming home in the morning.
But all in all, night was much fun. 3 of my friends there I hadn’t seen for a while, one of which came up from Dundee just for it.
Moving on, thanks to everyone at Rev.iew.me that gave the site good reviews, it was very much appreciated. I’ll get around to fixing the main criticisms (colours too bright) at some point.
I also updated the site’s permalink structure - it wasn’t working properly due to my server blocking Wordpress from properly accessing my .htaccess file, but I’ve managed to sort that, so I now have have nice, bearable URLs. I’ve also added a logo to the header, and made the Cherry and Apple themes a little less bright.
I’m really starting to enjoy college now. Well, on Thursday mostly, because of the “Multimedia Development” module we’re doing, and we’ve got an actual professional web developer in to lecture us, which is great. We’re getting taught XHTML and CSS by someone who really knows what they’re talking about! Unfortunately, we’ve started to move onto JavaScript, which I’ve never been particularly fond of. I know that it can be useful when used sparingly, but whenever I see JavaScript, all I can think about is those shitty and pointless effects that were all the rage in the late 90s. Eugh. But I guess it would be handy to have a knowledge of it that goes further than copying and pasting.
Oh, and you should go listen to some Pendulum. They rock. Especially their second album, In Silico. Great blend of drum n’ bass and rock. I’ve become totally addicted recently.
Anyway, that’s all from me. Toodles.
OH YES. Another blog by me. this must be, what, the twentieth by now? Most likely. But whatever. Again, I promise to make an effort to keep this one afloat, and to post stuff semi-regularly at least. I’ll try.
Anyway, I’ve recently started college. It’s not too bad. Shame I have to get the bus there and back, which isn’t particularly cheap, even with my student concession. Still, it’s not bad (better than school) and I’m only in twice a week, so it doesn’t exactly eat up your entire week. Hopefully, it’ll be fairly easy as well. I seem to be getting on pretty well so far, especially in Software Development. But it’s only been a couple of weeks. It’s undoubtedly going to get a lot more intense in the coming months.
I’ve bought a couple of Blu-Ray films as well recently, mostly to see what the quality was like. I got Superbad, Full Metal Jacket and Spider-Man 3 (Yeah, I know it’s shit but it was only a fiver :P). The quality is pretty damn good, but not quite as good as it’s being hyped up to be (even Full Metal Jacket is really good quality, which surprised me seeing as it’s like a 20 year old movie). It is noticeable to begin with, but you’re not sitting through the whole film thinking “OMG, the quality pwns!” It’s definitely a lot better than DVD, but not good enough to warrant paying £20 a pop for.
I also recently got Soulcalibur IV (PS3), which I am mightily impressed with. Very fun game, especially when you play it with a mate. My only real complaint is the difficulty of Arcade Mode. The Apprentice is so overpowered it’s absurd. Took me absolutely ages to unlock him. Doesn’t help you have to use Darth Vader, who’s quite a slow character. Still, great game. Just wish they’d hurry up and released Yoda as DLC.
I also managed to get Call of Duty 4 recently as well. Finally. I managed to find it quite cheap, so I snatched it up. £39.99 pre-owned at Gamestation (and just about anywhere else that sells pre-owned games)? FUCK THAT. I got it new in Argos for £30. I could’ve got it for PC, except I don’t really like playing PC games. I’d much rather lie on my bed, playing games in glorious HD on my lovely TV. That’s why I’m looking forward to BioShock on PS3 so much. Hunched over a keyboard and mouse, staring into a 17″ PC monitor mere inches from my face doesn’t really appeal to me.
Why does video gaming have to be such an expensive hobby. Sooner I get a job, the better.
Anyway, that’s all I have to say for now. Welcome back to the site. Again.
