So, the open beta of PlayStation Home was finally released on Thursday. FINALLY. this thing has been in development since 2005. For those not in the know, Home is a “social gaming experience”, or something to that effect. Basically, you create a virtual version of yourself, and you can then walk around virtual environment chatting and interacting with other people. It’s pretty cool. You can go to the theatre and watch trailers and things, go bowling or play pool, or just hang out in the Square or in a friend’s apartment.
Unfortunately, being a beta, there isn’t much content at the moment. The choice of clothing and accessories for your character is appalling. You’re basically limited to 3 or 4 pieces of each type of clothing (tops, bottoms, shoes, etc), so everyone looks very similar. You have the option to buy more things, but that selection is piss-poor as well, and each item costs 59p! I don’t really want to pay 59p for a pair of virtual shoes…
But anyway, it’s looking good and has a lot of potential. And even this content lacking is quite fun. Nothing quite like getting a massive line of people doing the “Running Man” dance.
The work night out I went to on Thursday was a lot of fun. Being new, it was a good way to get to know everyone, especially the ones who I don’t have the same shifts as. I had a great meal: melon for starters, chicken stuffed with black pudding (Mmm :D) for my main, and a Bailey’s chocolate cake thing for desert. Once we finished the meal, a load of us went down the pub, and a few (myself included) were out drinking till about 1am. I was a little hungover in the morning, but I didn’t start work till 1, so I managed to get a decent lie-in.
I had to work two shifts on Saturday to make up for the hours I lost on Thursday (I was meant to work 6 till 10, but obviously couldn’t because of the night out). I had to work 8am till 12. Then back in from 6pm till 10. That was a long day.
Anyway, I’d better be off. I have a college assignment due in tomorrow which I’ve barely started. :S
In college, we’ve just begun to start looking at using jQuery (a rather nice, cross-browser compatible JavaScript library), and I’ve found a rather good style switcher script (and managed to implement it on my localhost). My question is this:
Would you rather I switch over to this JavaScript powered one, or keep the PHP powered one I have now?
Obviously, being implemented in two completely different ways, there are advantages and disadvantages of switching. Firstly, what with JavaScript being client-side, the style switcher will work much faster, without the need to reload the page at all.
However, I know people often browse the web with JavaScript disabled, which would render the script completely unusable. I don’t know how many of my visitors have JavaScript disabled, so I don’t know how many people I would be excluding if I were to use the JavaScript one.
So, any thought/opinions about this? Which one would you prefer to see?
Hopefully.
I feel that the interview I had today went pretty well. It’s for the Co-Op (small supermarkety-type thing, as mentioned in previous post) as a Customer Service Assistant. I scored high on the questionnaire thing, and the guy who was interviewing me seemed pleased with my answers to his questions, even despite the fact I have pretty much no real work experience.
The pay is £5.85 an hour, which is pretty good - £1.08 higher than the minimum wage for someone my age. I’d be earning the same as my mum, assuming I got the job.
He said he’d phone my on Monday evening to let me known whether or not I was successful. So… two days of anxious waiting.
I’m also having a bit of trouble with some college homework. I’m not going to delve too much into it, but I basically need to figure out how to create an array of unique randomly generated numbers (between 1 and 40) in Java. We’ve been taught very little about actually using the language, so I’m having some difficulty with this, and any help would be great. If it helps (which I doubt), I’m using Maths.random() to generate the random numbers. Hell, even if you know how to do this in similar languages might help, since I might be able to work it out from that.
Oh and also… it’s been snowing. Gah. I foresee a lot of standing around, waiting for buses in the near future. Our bus services are an atrocity. I cant remember the last time I got on a bus that was on time.
On Thursday, I got out of collge an hour early. Yay. So I headed down to the bus station and just as I entered, the bus I needed to get on pulled away. Annoying yes, but couldn’t really be helped. The next one in about 20 minutes, so I went to Woolworths to kill some time. I left 5 minutes early to go and get the bus, which was due at 15:15. As I was walking down the road to the bus station, at 15:08, the bus was leaving.
WTF?
I need to learn to drive. Out of the last four times I’ve been to college, I’ve been late three of those, due to late buses. Grr.
